Spotlight: Plum Island of Newburyport

Without a doubt, Newburyport Landing is nestled in a vivacious town filled with restaurants, shops, theaters, nightlife, beaches, and wildlife. Newburyport, incorporated in 1851, is a go-to coastal destination in Massachusetts.

One of the greatest aspects of Newburyport is Plum Island. Only two miles from downtown Newburyport, Plum Island is a place to explore, play, and relax! The island was named after the beach plum shrubs that grow in the dunes. Being 11 miles long, there’s so much you could do! Enjoy the natural beauty of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and uncover astonishing bird watching. Cast a line or go for a mellow kayaking trip.

On the North Point of the Island is the location where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Merrimack River – also known as Newburyport Harbor. A hidden gem of Plum Island, the Plum Island Light House, built in 1898, is on the Northern end and offers Open Houses every third Sunday of each month starting in May until September from 1:00 – 4:00 PM. There’s a fun playground at the edge of the beach near the lighthouse that kids would surely love to play on! If you’re interested in scheduling a guided fishing trip or chartered boat cruise, Captain’s Fishing Parties is the premier Newburyport boating company and situated on the Northern end of Plum Island. Captain’s Fishing Parties offers both private and public trips and also hosts an array of social events.

The public beach is located on the central part of Plum Island. The entire island is full of picturesque sand dunes and breathtaking ocean views. Relax and take a short snooze on the beach to the sound of peaceful and mysterious ocean waves crashing on the sand as the sun delicately reveals its warmth on your skin. Take in the sunset reflecting off the water, or if you’re a morning person, we highly suggest to start your morning off with an unparalleled sunrise.
